Gingerbread Man Story Coloring Pages

Welcome to my Gingerbread Man story coloring pages section.

The Gingerbread Man first appeared in print in an American children's magazine in 1875, but parents were sharing the story with their kids long before that! Who chases him changes from one telling to the next, but almost all versions include the familiar chant, "Run, run as fast as you can... you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man!"

A Little Old Woman and a Little Old Man

The story starts in a farmhouse with Grandma and Grandpa, the pair the old tales call a little old woman and a little old man. Grandma has decided today is a good day to bake something. Grandpa's job is to stay out of the way and look hungry.

Making a Gingerbread Man

The little old woman mixes a big bowl of dough, rolls it out on the table and presses in the gingerbread man cutter. Then she pipes on a smile and a row of buttons with her icing bag. He looks friendlier than most cookies, and he's about to turn out livelier too.

Into the Oven

The little old woman pulls on her oven mitts and slides the tray inside. Gingerbread bakes with ginger and cinnamon, so the whole house starts to smell like a Christmas card before long. She doesn't suspect a thing.

Out Pops the Gingerbread Man

The little old woman opens the oven door to check on her cookie, and out jumps the Gingerbread Man with his arms in the air. She's baked a lot of cookies and not one of them has ever done that.

Out the Door

She doesn't even get a word in before he's through the door and down the steps. He isn't scared, he's thrilled, and he has a rhyme ready: Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!

Grandpa Joins In

The little old woman is right behind him with her apron flapping, and the little old man hears the commotion (and smells the delicious scent of gingerbread!) and hurries out from the farmhouse. Both of them run faster than anyone expected, but not fast enough. The Gingerbread Man just shouts the rhyme again over his shoulder.

Cow, Horse and Dog

The Gingerbread Man races down a dirt path past the barn, and the farm animals can't resist a chase. The cow trots after him because she'd like a bite. The horse wants to know what the fuss is about, and the dog barks and runs alongside with his tongue flapping, because dogs never pass up a good run. Each of them gets the rhyme shouted back.

The Fox at the River

At the end of the road is a wide river, and the Gingerbread Man skids to a stop. Cookies and water don't mix, so he's stuck. Then a fox sitting on the bank smiles and offers him a lift across, in the friendliest voice a fox has ever used.

A Ride Across

The fox swims out with the Gingerbread Man perched on the tip of his tail. Soon the water gets deeper and the fox suggests the back would be drier, so the Gingerbread Man climbs up there with a worried look. Then the fox says the back is getting wet too, and the safest place of all is right on his nose.

Snap!

The nose was never the safe spot. The fox flicks his head back, the Gingerbread Man sails up into the air with his arms and legs flung out, and the fox's jaws go snap.

The Fox Is Full

That's where the Gingerbread Man's run ends. The fox sits back on the bank with his eyes closed, licking his lips and wishing there were more, with only a few crumbs and one lonely button left behind. The little old woman and the little old man will head home and put another tray in the oven, and this time the door stays shut until the timer goes off.
