Wizard of Oz Coloring Pages

When my high school put on The Wizard of Oz, I didn't have a part, but I sang in the choir, and I still know every song by heart. Dorothy and her friends are some of my favourite characters, and they're all here, along with both witches and a couple of Winged Monkeys.

A Girl, a Dog and a Very Grey Farm

Dorothy lived on a little farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, where everything was flat and grey for miles around. The only thing that wasn't grey was Toto, her little dog with twinkly eyes, who played all day long while Dorothy played right along with him.

Toto and the Cyclone

One afternoon the sky went dark and a twister came roaring across the prairie. Everyone ran for the storm cellar, but Toto hid under the bed, and by the time Dorothy dragged him out it was too late. The whole house spun up into the sky with the two of them still inside!

Ruby Slippers and a Yellow Brick Road

The house came down with a bump in a bright, flowery land full of Munchkins, right on top of the Wicked Witch of the East! Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, floated down in a shiny bubble and put the witch's ruby slippers on Dorothy's feet. Then the Wicked Witch of the West burst out of a puff of red smoke, green from her chin to her pointy hat. She wanted those slippers for herself and swore she'd get them back, so Glinda told Dorothy to keep them on tight. Only the Wizard of Oz could get Dorothy home, so off she went down the yellow brick road.

A Scarecrow Who Wanted Brains

Dorothy hadn't gone far when a scarecrow in a cornfield started talking to her. The crows weren't scared of him one bit, and he was sure it was because his head was stuffed with nothing but straw.

Dorothy helped him down off his pole, and he asked to come along and get some brains from the Wizard. Funnily enough, he had the cleverest ideas of anyone for the rest of the trip.

The Tin Man's Squeaky Problem

Deeper in the forest they found a man made of tin, standing perfectly still with his axe in the air. He'd rusted solid in a rainstorm, so Dorothy grabbed his oil can and oiled his squeaky joints until he could move again.

The Tin Man had been made without a heart and wanted one more than anything. For someone with no heart he cried awfully easily, which was a real problem, since tears made him rust!

A Lion Who Was Scared of Everything

With a terrible roar a lion bounded onto the road and went straight for Toto. Dorothy didn't stop to think. She marched right up and smacked him on the nose!

The Lion burst into tears and admitted he was scared of just about everything, even his own tail. Dorothy invited him to come along and ask the Wizard for some courage.

Everything Is Green in the Emerald City

At last they reached the Emerald City, where everything sparkled green, and they rode through town behind a horse that kept changing colors. Before long the Wicked Witch zoomed overhead on her broom and wrote a message across the sky in black smoke, telling Dorothy to give up.

The Wizard turned out to be a giant floating head in a cloud of fire and smoke, and he scared the Lion so badly that he ran right down the hall. He'd help them, he said, but only if they brought him the Wicked Witch's broomstick.

Monkeys With Wings (When They Want Them)

The Witch had been watching them in her crystal ball the whole time. She sent her Winged Monkeys swooping down to scatter the Scarecrow's straw and carry Dorothy and Toto off to her castle.

The monkeys on this page have their wings tucked away. They only pop them out (magically?) when it's time to fly.

A Bucket of Water

The Witch locked Dorothy in a tower with an hourglass full of red sand and told her she had until it ran out to hand over the slippers. Luckily, Toto slipped away and ran off to fetch help.

Her friends sneaked into the castle dressed as guards, but the Witch caught them and set the Scarecrow's arm on fire. Dorothy threw a bucket of water to save him, splashed the Witch by accident, and the Witch melted into a puddle! The guards were so happy that they gave Dorothy the broomstick.

The Man Behind the Curtain

Back in the Emerald City, Toto tugged open a curtain in the corner, and behind it was an ordinary old man pulling levers. The great Wizard was just a man from Kansas whose balloon had blown off course years before.

He kept his promises anyway. The Scarecrow got a diploma and the Lion got a medal for bravery, while the Tin Man got a ticking clock shaped like a heart. It turned out they'd had what they wanted all along.

Three Clicks to Kansas

The Wizard offered to fly Dorothy home in his balloon, but Toto jumped out after a cat, and while Dorothy chased him the balloon floated off without her. Then Glinda arrived in her bubble with some wonderful news.

The ruby slippers could have taken Dorothy home the whole time! She hugged her friends goodbye, held Toto tight and clicked her heels together, saying there's no place like home. Just like that she was back in Kansas, and nothing had ever looked so lovely, not even the grey.

More to Color

The rainbow and the bluebirds come from the most famous song in the movie, and both have whole pages of their own.

Fun Facts About the Wizard of Oz

A few things you might not know about Oz:

  1. In the book, Dorothy's slippers were silver. The movie made them ruby red to show off its brand new Technicolor.
  2. Toto was played by a Cairn Terrier named Terry, and Terry was a girl!
  3. In the book, the Scarecrow's new brains were made of bran mixed with pins and needles, to make him sharp.
  4. The Emerald City in the book wasn't really all that green. Everyone just had to wear green glasses.
  5. L. Frank Baum wrote thirteen more Oz books because kids kept writing to ask what happened next.
