Viking Shield Maiden Coloring Pages

by Leanne Guenther
Last Updated:

A Viking grave in Sweden was filled with swords, arrows and a shield, so for over a century everyone assumed a man was buried in it. In 2017 DNA showed the warrior was a woman. Historians still argue about what that means, but the old sagas are full of shield maidens, fierce women who fought beside the men and sometimes led them.

Shield Maidens and Their Shields

Viking shields were made of wooden planks with an iron knob in the middle that protected the hand gripping it from behind. They were often painted too. The shields lined up along the rails of one famous ship burial in Norway were yellow and black.

Viking Women

Most Viking women never went to battle. They ran the farm while the men were away at sea, kept the keys to the storehouse, owned property and could even end a marriage.
