Carrot Coloring Pages
The first carrots people grew were purple and yellow! Orange carrots came along later, and today you can still find carrots in purple, red and white too. The part we eat is a root that grows under the soil, while the feathery green tops stay above the ground. Orange carrots get their color from something called beta carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A to help keep your eyes healthy.

Simple Carrots
A carrot is a cousin of parsley and celery. You can spot the family resemblance in those feathery green tops.
Bunnies and Carrots
Cartoon bunnies are always crunching carrots, but real rabbits like hay and leafy greens best. Carrots are so sweet that they're more like dessert for a rabbit.
Watering the Carrots
Carrot seeds are tiny, and they can take a couple of weeks to poke up out of the soil. Gardeners keep the ground damp the whole time so the seeds don't dry out.
Harvest Time
You can tell a carrot is ready when its orange shoulders start to peek out of the soil. Then a gardener loosens the dirt and pulls the carrot up by its green top.
Chopping Carrots
Cooking carrots makes them soft, and it also helps your body take in more of their beta carotene. Raw carrots are crunchy and sweet, so a chef can pick whichever suits the dish.
