Freya is a Norse goddess who loves beauty and nature, but she's also a brave warrior. She's not only about love and pretty things but also a protector of heroes.

Freya, Goddess of Beauty and Battle

When brave fighters fall in battle, half are welcomed by Freya into a special place called Fólkvangr. She also knows powerful magic, which helps her understand mysterious things, teaching the balance of gentleness and courage.

Freya's Cats, Bygul and Trjegul

Freya's chariot isn't pulled by horses. It's pulled by two cats! Bygul and Trjegul are said to be as fierce as they are fluffy, and they follow her from battlefields to snowy forests. Some stories picture them as lynxes...

Hildisvini, Freya's Battle Boar

Hildisvini means "battle pig", and when Freya rides him into a fight he lives up to the name. With her though, he's a loyal friend rather than a wild beast.

One old poem even hints that he's really a man Freya disguised as a boar to keep him safe!

Freyr, Freya's Twin Brother

Freyr is the god of sunshine, rain and harvests, so farmers hoped he would send the right weather for their crops. Stories say he and Freya came to live among the gods of Asgard together, after a peace deal ended a long war between two families of gods.

Freya and the Vanir

Freya belongs to the Vanir, the gods of nature, wealth and magic. They were a different family from the warrior gods of Asgard (like Thor and Odin), and the two sides fought a long war before they made peace.

Stories say Freya moved to Asgard as part of that peace and brought her magic with her. She even taught it to Odin!
