Gladiolus Coloring Pages

Gladiolus means “little sword” in Latin, named for its long, pointed leaves, which is why it's also called the sword lily. It's the August birth flower too.

Gladiolus flowers open from the bottom of the stalk to the top, one after another, like a staircase of blooms. A gladiolus fairy would never run out of places to perch.

Where winters are cold, gladiolus bulbs have to be dug up in the fall and kept indoors until spring. That's a lot of work for a gardener troll who would rather be napping under a bridge.

About Gladiolus:

Gladiolus come in the colors of a summer sunset. There are fiery reds and oranges, sunny yellows, deep purples, soft pinks and creamy whites, and some have a splash of a second color deep in the throat of each flower, as if it had been painted from the inside.

A tall stalk of them looks like fireworks frozen in the middle of a burst, with blossoms stacked all the way up toward the sky. Put a few in a tall vase and the whole room seems to stand a little taller.
