Zentangle Style Doodle Coloring Pages

by Leanne Guenther
Last Updated:

Doodle art breaks a picture into little sections and fills each one with its own pattern, like swirls, dots, scales or stripes. It can turn something as everyday as a pumpkin or a turkey into something that looks hand-woven. These days it's often called zentangle style, but the idea is a lot older than the name. I still have a scrapbook from the 70s full of doodles just like these that my mom and I made together. My Grandma Ann called them cross stitch doodles. She was an avid cross stitcher, and I think she doodled her patterns on paper first before stitching them into a sampler with thread.

Floral Animal Art

Floral animal art works a lot like doodle art, except each section is filled with flowers and leaves instead of patterns. Some match the animal's home, like an armadillo with a cactus garden shell, and some are just for fun, like a dragon covered in peonies.

Floral Folk Art

Folk art flowers are the kind painted on wooden chests and stitched onto tea towels in old farmhouses. Where doodle art is all about busy little patterns, folk art keeps things bold and balanced, with one big bloom in the middle and matching stems curling out on each side.
