Sports Stars

Tennis Girl

In tennis a score of zero is called love, so a player who's behind 40 to love hasn't won a single point yet. Nobody knows for sure why, but one popular guess is the French word for egg, which looks a lot like a zero.

Baseball Girl

A baseball's leather cover is sewn on with 108 double stitches. Pitchers use those raised seams to grip the ball when they throw a curve.

Football Girl

Footballs are nicknamed pigskins because early ones used a pig's bladder to hold the air. Today they're made of cowhide, so the nickname stuck around even though the pigs didn't.

The classic black and white soccer ball is sewn from 32 panels: 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. This player has a whistle in her hand, so she may be the coach as well as the star.

Helpers

Doctor Girl

The stethoscope was invented in 1816 when a French doctor rolled up a sheet of paper to listen to a patient's heart. It worked so well that he soon made one out of wood.

A fire hydrant is a tap connected to the big water pipes under the street, so a fire crew can hook up a hose and keep the water coming. That's why people shovel them out after a snowfall.

People in China were using wheelbarrows to haul heavy loads about two thousand years ago. The wheel carries most of the weight so the builder only has to lift a little of it.

Farmer Boy

Roosters don't crow just because the sun comes up. They have a built-in body clock that tells them morning is coming, so they often start while it's still dark.

Cowboy

Cowboy boots have a tall slanted heel so a rider's foot can't slip through the stirrup. The pointed toe helps the boot slide in easily too.

A horseshoe gets nailed right onto a horse's hoof and it doesn't hurt. A hoof is made of the same stuff as your fingernails.

Caveman

People in the Stone Age lived in all sorts of places and caves were only one of them. They also built shelters from branches and animal hides.
