Welcome to our Kingfisher coloring pages section!

Kingfishers are dazzling little birds known for their bright blue feathers and lightning-fast dives. They live near rivers, lakes, and ponds, where they hunt for fish and insects. Even in winter, when the water begins to freeze, some kingfishers stay close to open streams, perching quietly on icy branches as they watch for ripples below. Their colorful feathers stand out beautifully against snowy banks, adding a spark of life to the quiet winter landscape.

The Greek Myth of the Kingfisher

In the story, Alcyone, daughter of Aeolus (the god of the winds), and her husband Ceyx loved each other deeply. When Ceyx was lost at sea, Alcyone threw herself into the waves in grief. The gods, moved by her sorrow, transformed them both into kingfishers so they could remain together.

The story says that during the time Alcyone nested on the sea, her father calmed the winds so the waters would stay still ... these peaceful winter days became known as the Halcyon Days.

The Tale of Alcyone, Daughter of Aeolus, Greek God of the Winds

I am Alcyone, daughter of the wind. The sea has been my companion since childhood, its voice rising and falling with my own breath. I could always tell when a storm was coming; the gulls grew restless, and the air held its warning. Yet the day my husband, Ceyx, set sail, the water was so calm that even my heart believed it safe.

Days passed, and the horizon stayed empty. Then came the storm. It began as a whisper, a change in light, and soon the sky tore open. I felt his danger before I saw it. The winds, my father’s children, howled and pulled at the waves until the sea devoured his ship. I ran to the shore, shouting his name, my voice lost to the thunder.

When the sea gave back his body, my world went quiet. I walked into the cold surf. Salt and sorrow filled my lungs, but before the water closed over me, I felt warmth... a sudden calm, as if the storm itself had taken pity. My arms changed shape, my voice turned to a cry sharper and freer than speech. Feathers shimmered where tears had been.

Beside me, Ceyx rose too, no longer lost to the depths. Together we flew above the gentle waves, our wings cutting through the silver air. The sea lay smooth beneath us, hushed and waiting. Each winter, when the world grows cold and the waters still, my father grants a few quiet days without wind. They call them the Halcyon Days.

During that brief peace, I build my nest and sing above the calm sea, a reminder that even after the fiercest storms, love can bring the wind itself to rest.
