Hernán Cortés (1485–1547) was a Spanish conquistador and explorer, best known for leading the expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century. Born in Medellín, Spain, he sailed to the Americas in 1504 and quickly gained a reputation for boldness and ambition.
Cortés played a pivotal role in the Spanish colonization of Mexico, forging alliances with indigenous groups and capturing the Aztec emperor Montezuma II. His actions set in motion profound political, cultural, and social changes, marking a turning point in the history of the Americas.
About Hernán Cortés

I am Hernán Cortés, a man of Spain and a captain driven by ambition. I have crossed oceans and jungles, leaving behind the familiar for lands unknown, driven by dreams of gold, glory, and empire. Each day, I lead my men through forests and canals, facing dangers both natural and human, yet every challenge strengthens my resolve. I am strategist, soldier, and negotiator, navigating a world of unfamiliar customs, languages, and power.
Tenochtitlan rises before me, a city more magnificent than any I have ever imagined. Its temples pierce the sky, canals wind like silver threads, and its markets overflow with wealth and color. And within this jewel of the Aztec Empire sits Montezuma II, the emperor whose authority shapes everything around him. When I first met him, I was struck by his presence, his intelligence, and the weight of his power. He is both a king and a symbol, commanding respect and devotion from a people whose civilization is far beyond what I had expected.
Now, he is my captive, and I feel the tension of that act pressing against my ambition. I respect him for his wisdom and his composure, yet I must use him as a tool, as a means to secure the city and its treasures. There is a strange mixture of admiration and calculation in my mind, a recognition of his greatness tempered by the certainty that his submission will shape the course of history. I walk a fine line between diplomacy and domination, knowing that every gesture, every word, will echo across the empire and into the future.
I watch him, the emperor of Tenochtitlan, as he moves through the halls of his own palace under my shadow. His calm is remarkable, even in captivity, and it reminds me that this empire is not built on me alone. The people still look to him, still hope in him, and that inspires a cautious respect even as I press forward with my plan. I am relentless, but I am aware that Montezuma II embodies a civilization that will not bend easily, and that my victories here are as much a test of strategy as of courage.
I am Hernán Cortés, explorer, conqueror, and man of ambition. I have crossed seas, faced storms and enemies, and now I stand in the heart of Tenochtitlan with its emperor under my control. I feel both awe and impatience, admiration and calculation, knowing that history watches our every move. Montezuma II’s presence challenges me even as it serves me, a reminder that greatness, whether in Spain or in the New World, cannot be dismissed lightly. The story we are writing together - willingly or not - will be remembered for generations, a collision of worlds that neither of us could have predicted.
