A fruit is the part of a plant that grows from a flower and holds the seeds. By that rule pumpkins, cucumbers, eggplants and even pea pods are fruits, which is why this page has a few surprises.

Berries and Small Fruits

Small fruits grow on low bushes and twisting vines, so you can pick plenty without a ladder.

Aggregate Fruits

A raspberry is really a bundle of tiny fruits stuck together, and every little bump has its own seed inside. Blackberries are built the same way, and a thorny bramble patch full of them makes a very good hiding place for an eastern cottontail...

Berries

A true berry grows from one flower and has its seeds inside the soft part. Grapes, cranberries and blueberries all fit, and so do bananas and tomatoes! Strawberries don't, because their seeds sit on the outside...

Grapes

Grapes grow in bunches on twisting vines, and every grape is a true berry with its seeds inside. Dry them in the sun and they turn into raisins.

Kiwis

A kiwifruit is fuzzy and brown on the outside and bright green on the inside, with a ring of tiny black seeds around the middle. It grows on a woody vine and counts as a berry.

Strawberries

A strawberry wears its seeds on the outside, about 200 of them. Each one is really a tiny fruit with a seed inside, so a strawberry is a whole crowd of fruits on one red cushion.

Tree Fruits

Tree fruits ripen on the branches, and an orchard can grow rows and rows of them.

Apples

Every apple starts out as a blossom. Slice one in half across the middle and the seeds make a little star.

Cherries

A cherry has one hard stone in the middle with the seed tucked inside. Fruits built this way are called stone fruits, and peaches and plums are made the same way.

Figs

A fig is really a hollow pod with hundreds of tiny flowers growing on the inside. The crunchy bits are tiny fruits, each with a seed in it. Wild figs rely on tiny wasps that crawl inside to pollinate them.

Peaches

A peach is a stone fruit with one big pit in the middle and a fuzzy skin outside. Peaches with smooth skin have their own name, and it's nectarine.

Momotaro, the Peach Boy

In an old Japanese story an old woman finds a giant peach floating down a river. When she and her husband open it there's a baby boy inside. He grows up to be Momotaro, the Peach Boy, and sets off with a dog, a monkey and a pheasant to face a band of ogres...

Pears

A pear is shaped like a teardrop, narrow at the top and round at the bottom. Pears ripen best after they've been picked, so they're often sold hard and left on the counter to soften.

Plums

A plum is a stone fruit that comes in purple, red, yellow and even green. Dry one in the sun and you get a prune.

Pomegranates

Open a pomegranate and you'll find hundreds of seeds, each wrapped in its own juicy red pocket called an aril. Those little pockets are the part people eat.

Citrus and Tropical Fruits

These fruits like warm places where frost is rare.

Bananas

A banana is a berry! It grows from one flower and has tiny seeds in the middle, though the ones in the shops have been bred so the seeds are too small to notice. A bunch of bananas is called a hand and each banana is a finger.

Coconuts

A coconut isn't really a nut. It's a drupe, the same kind of fruit as a peach, with a hard shell around the seed. A coconut can float across the sea and sprout on a faraway beach.

Lemons

Lemons are so sour because they're full of acid. The yellow rind has tiny pockets of oil, which is why a lemon smells so zingy when you scratch it.

Oranges

An orange comes in its own wrapper. The peel comes off and the juicy segments inside pull apart one by one. Orange trees have sweet-smelling white blossoms, and a tree can wear blossoms and ripe oranges at the same time.

Pineapples

A pineapple is lots of little fruits fused into one. Each diamond on its skin marks a separate flower that grew into part of the fruit.

Surprise Fruits

Nobody puts these in a fruit salad, but they all grow from a flower and hold seeds.

Cucumbers

A cucumber is a fruit, and a special kind of berry called a pepo with a tough rind and seeds in the middle. It's in the same plant family as pumpkins and melons.

Eggplants

An eggplant is a berry too, from the same plant family as tomatoes and potatoes. The first ones people grew were small and white, which is where the name comes from.

Gourds

A gourd turns hard as a rock when it dries. People have been using dried gourds as bowls, bottles and birdhouses for thousands of years.

Paprika

Paprika is a spice made from dried and ground peppers, and peppers are fruits because they grow from a flower and hold seeds. It's a favourite in Hungarian cooking.

Peanuts

Peanuts grow underground! After the flower is pollinated its stem bends down and pushes the baby pod into the soil to ripen. A peanut isn't a true nut either. It's a legume, a cousin of peas and beans.

Pumpkins

A pumpkin is really a giant berry with a thick rind and a hollow middle full of seeds. That makes every jack-o'-lantern a berry!

Watermelons

A watermelon is mostly water, which is why it's such a good snack on a hot day. It's in the same plant family as pumpkins and cucumbers, so it's another giant berry in disguise.

Fruit on the Table

Fruit ends up in baskets, bowls, pies and feasts as well as on the plant.

Banquets

A banquet is a big feast, and platters piled with fruit have been part of feasts for thousands of years.

Chefs

A chef can turn a bowl of fruit into pies, smoothies and jam. Cooking fruit with sugar is an old trick for saving summer fruit long after the season is over.

Cornucopias

A cornucopia is a horn-shaped basket spilling over with fruit and vegetables. The name comes from Latin words meaning "horn of plenty" and it's a symbol of a good harvest.

Fruit Bowls

A bowl of fruit is a little lesson in how plants make seeds. Some fruit has one big stone, some has lots of small seeds and a few fruits wear their seeds on the outside.

Graffiti Art Fruit

This one is for older kids who like a challenge. Apples, a pineapple and a kiwi are packed in between bold patterns, with big graffiti-style letters spelling out the word fruit.
