The numbat is a small, colorful marsupial from Australia with a long snout and an even longer, sticky tongue which is perfect for catching its favorite food: termites! With its reddish-brown fur and white stripes, it almost looks like a tiny, striped fox. Once found across much of southern Australia, numbats are now quite rare, living mostly in protected woodlands.
Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is also known as the banded anteater.
The numbat is a termite-eating marsupial native to Western Australia. It is the only surviving member of the family Myrmecobiidae and one of the few marsupials active during the day. Adult numbats grow to about 35–45 cm (including tail) and can eat up to 20,000 termites a day. Wow!!
The species once ranged widely across southern and western Australia, but habitat loss and introduced predators (especially foxes and cats) caused sharp declines. Today, numbats are listed as endangered, with fewer than 2,000 individuals left in the wild. Conservation programs are helping their numbers slowly recover.
Recognized for their unique diet, bright coloring, and ecological importance, numbats are a symbol of wildlife protection in Australia and are the state animal emblem of Western Australia.
